My art and the Bird’s Head Seascape
Posters!
Written By Nate Wilson
A poster featuring my watercolor paintings of fifty seven endemic species of reef fish from Indonesia’s Bird’s Head Seascape should be out soon! I have been working on this as part of an ongoing project since May of 2020 with Dr. Mark Erdmann, of Conservation International and Marit Miners of the Misool Foundation. My artwork is currently featured on various products, such as tshirts, bags, prints, etc, being sold at Misool Eco-Resort and the Misool Filling Station in Sorong. 100% of profits generated by sales will be used by the Misool Foundation to help support Marine Protected Areas throughout the Bird’s Head Seascape. The poster, which I designed as well, will be printed in both Bahasa Indonesia and English, and will be distributed throughout the Bird’s Head. I have also completed a poster for the endemic species of Cenderawasih Bay National Park; many of which are the same.
Painting fifty seven paintings took approximately six months of nights and weekends. It was great to have a project of this scope to work on as it really helped me to focus my art. I have been able to meet some really knowledgeable, passionate and amazing people through the process. I also learned quite a bit about the Birds Head Seascape and the endemic fish species there. Not only do I feel great about what my art will be used for, but it also helped to have something positive to focus on during the pandemic. I have also been working on a similar poster project focusing on the endemic species of Milne Bay in Papua New Guinea.
I am excited that my art will be used to aid in conservation efforts in the Birds Head Seascape. If you dont know anything about it please follow this link https://birdsheadseascape.com/
I would like to continue to explore opportunities for my art to be used in similar circumstances globally, nationally, or locally. If you have a project in mind and you think that I may be a good fit contact me here.
